Words are powerful, beautiful, and dangerous. When used correctly they can uplift us, comfort us and guide. The language we choose to use when speaking to (and about) young people in education can often be detrimental. Words have a lasting impact, they can make or break us. This talk will explore the power of words in education, on social media and in our personal lives. Varaidzo spends her time making content for YouTube, and just recently finished presenting a series for BBC Teach. On August 17th 2020, The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) joined a group of young leaders from our network and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to discuss social media and the role of the online world as a force for good. Participants in the conversation were Brighton Kaoma, founder of Agents of Change Foundation in Zambia; Hunter Johnson, founder of The Man Cave in Australia; Rosie Thomas, co-founder of Project Rockit in Australia; and, Vee Kativhu, Study & Empowerment YouTuber and founder of ‘Empowered by Vee,’ The discussion was chaired by Chief Executive of QCT, Nicola Brentnall. In this film, the participants take a closer look at the power and potential of digital communities, collaboration and positive behaviours. The Duke of Sussex commented during the discussion: “No one could have predicted just how the world was going to change in such a short space of time, especially with the digital space.
